So I’ve been thinking a lot about how my two worlds: UX design and filmmaking, aren’t so different after all. Both are about creating experiences that draw people in, guide them through a journey, and make them feel something real. Whether it’s on a screen or behind a camera, at the end of the day, it’s storytelling.
Storytelling at the core
UX design and filmmaking both live and die by the story. In UX, every button and sub-head tells part of a user’s journey. In film, each shot and line of dialogue pulls you deeper into the narrative. It starts with understanding your audience and making them care.
Empathy is the Secret Weapon
Good design starts with empathy, and so does great filmmaking. Whether you’re figuring out what a user needs or what makes a character tick, both require stepping into someone else’s shoes and seeing the world from their perspective.
Visuals tell the story
Designing a slick, intuitive interface isn’t too different from framing the perfect shot. Composition, color, and pacing play key roles in both worlds to visually guide someone through an experience.
Testing ideas
In UX, you’re always testing, whether it’s wireframes or prototypes. In film, you’re doing the same with storyboards, camera tests, edits, and rough cuts. You’ve gotta see what works, tweak what doesn’t, and keep iterating until it clicks.
No I in team
No UX project or film gets made solo. Designers lean on developers, researchers, and PMs, just like directors lean on their crew. The best stuff happens when everyone’s ideas come together in the best way.
It’s cool to see how these worlds overlap, and honestly, I’m loving exploring the space in between.
